What Do Educational Credentials Signal and Why Do Employers Value Credentials?

چکیده

This paper examines whether employers can infer information about workers’ pre-college abilities from the college credentials they acquire and whether employers value the attainment of credentials because credentials signal these abilities. I find that a high school diploma, college attendance, a bachelor’s degree and a graduate degree signal higher pre-college abilities that are reflected in scores from tests administered to respondents in the NLSY. However, an associate’s degree does not. Estimating a sorting model of wage determination, the results indicate that employers do value the attainment of a bachelor’s degree in part because it signals these pre-college abilities. The coefficient estimates on an associate’s degree and a bachelor’s degree remain statistically significant after controlling for ability. This indicates that these degrees mark other attributes that employers find worthwhile, perhaps unobserved ability such as motivation and perseverance. [JEL J31]  1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. Ivies, extracurriculars, and exclusion: Elite employersâ€TM use of educational credentials

Although a robust literature has demonstrated a positive relationship between education and socio-economic attainment, the processes through which formal schooling yields enhanced economic and social rewards remain less clear. How Important is Labor Market Signaling? New Evidence from High School Exit Exams

Credentials-based tests of the signaling hypothesis assess whether, conditional on years of completed education, workers with an educational credential earn more than workers without one. While several studies have shown that they do, and while this has been interpreted as evidence in support of the signaling hypothesis, this interpretation will be misleading if workers with credentials are obs...

An Interactive Trust Management and Negotiation Scheme

Interactive access control allows a server to compute on the fly missing credentials needed to grant access and to adapt its responses on the basis of client’s presented and declined credentials. Privacy-Preserving Credentials Upon Trusted Computing Augmented Servers

Credentials are an indispensable means for service access control in electronic commerce. However, regular credentials such as X.509 certificates and SPKI/SDSI certificates do not address user privacy at all, while anonymous credentials that protect user privacy are complex and have compatibility problems with existing PKIs. In this paper we propose privacy-preserving credentials, a concept bet...

A Survey on Non-transferable Anonymous Credentials

There are at least two principal approaches to prevent users from sharing their anonymous credentials: adding valuable secrets into the system the user does not want to share or embedding biometric access control. This paper seeks to identify possible fields of application and to compare both approaches with respect to the credentials’ nontransferability. The paper shows that both approaches do...
